Major star forced to skip Oscars after health diagnosis

Glenn Close has been forced to bow out of her appearance at the 95th Academy Awards after testing positive for Covid.

The 75-year-old acting legend was due to present an award at the show on Monday, but is remaining at home where she is "isolating and resting", according to reports by the Associated Press.

Close's publicist, Catherine Olim, confirmed that the actor contracted the virus and would no longer be able to attend the Oscars ceremony.

"She was very much looking forward to taking part in the show," Olim said in a statement, while she did not share details about the extent of Close's symptoms.

Producers are scrambling to find a replacement to present for actress, who has been nominated several times but never won, as she was reportedly meant to announce the winner of this year's Oscar for best picture award.

Sadly, Close’s appearance at the Oscars in the Los Angeles Dolby Theatre was meant to be a fun reunion between her and Harrison Ford, co-stars of the 1997 action picture Air Force One.

Glenn Close was among an impressive group of A-listers to present awards, including Riz Ahmed, Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson, Michael B. Jordan, Troy Kotsur, Melissa McCarthy, Janelle Monáe and more.

This is not the first year that Covid has forced stars to pull out, as Lin Manuel-Miranda had to skip last year's show after his wife tested positive for the virus just before the award ceremony.

The virus has taken its toll on other awards shows, with Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jamie Lee Curtis having to bow out of the Critics Choice awards in January following their participation in the Golden Globes the week before.

Glenn Close opens up about traumatic cult childhood

Glenn Close is opening up about her past.

As a respected actress in Hollywood, many know that the 74-year-old has been nominated for an Oscar eight times, but what is relatively unknown in comparison is her upbringing in a movement called Moral Re-Armament (MRA), which has been described as cult-like.

“It’s astounding that something you go through at such a young stage in your life still has such a potential to be destructive,” the star said during an interview on Prince Harry and Opray Winfrey's new Apple TV+ series The Me You Can't See.

“I think that’s childhood trauma, because of the devastation, emotional and psychological, of the cult,” she added.

“I am psychologically traumatised.”

Close said that her father William became involved in the movement when she was just a child and took their family to the MRA's Switzerland headquarters. The family lived their for two years while William worked as a doctor in Africa.

Ultimately, the family would be involved with the organisation for about 15 years.

“It was basically a cult. Everyone spouted the same things, and there’s a lot of rules, a lot of control,” recalled Close. ”Because of how we were raised, anything you thought you’d do for yourself was considered selfish. We never went on any vacations or had any collective memories of stuff other than what we went through, which was really awful.”

She said the way she was raised had lasting effects on her, and even played a role in her relationships. Close has been married and divorced three times, and also shares a daughter, Annie, with a previous long-time partner.

“I have not been successful in my relationships and finding a permanent partner, and I’m sorry about that,” she explained. “I think it’s our natural state to be connected like that. I don’t think you ever change your trigger points, but at least you can be aware of them, and at least you can maybe avoid situations that might make you vulnerable, especially in relationships.”

She joked: “It’s probably why we all have our dogs.”

At the age of 22, Close left the organisation and went to William & Mary College in Virginia to study drama.

Close mentioned that she ended up in therapy to help treat the issues brought on by her upbringing and also went on to reveal the mental health issues her family faced.

Her sister Jessie has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and her nephew suffers from schizophrenia.

“Jessie was always considered the wild one, the rebel, but when she came up to me one summer at my parents’ house in Wyoming, her kids were already in the car, and she came up to me and said, ‘I need help, I can’t stop thinking about killing myself,’ and for me it was a shock,” the star said.

“She ended up in hospital. I took her there. She was finally at age 50 properly diagnosed with bipolar one with psychotic tendencies.”

8 incredible actors who haven’t won an Oscar

The world was thrilled when Leonardo DiCaprio finally broke his Oscars drought and won the Best Actor gong at this year’s Academy Awards. However, it got us thinking – which other incredible actors have been overlooked by the Academy? We were shocked at what we found!

Glenn Close

We were surprised to discover 69-year-old Close never received an Oscar, especially given her illustrious career, which spans four decades. She has been nominated six times before, first in 1982 and most recently in 2011 for Albert Nobbs.

Johnny Depp

It’s hard to believe that one of the quirkiest actors around has never earned an Academy Award, despite receiving three nominations. In 2012 the 53-year-old held the Guinness World Record for the highest paid actor, but unfortunately money doesn’t equal acclaim!

Liam Neeson

One of our favourites, 64-year-old Liam Neeson received a Best Actor nomination for his performance in Spielberg’s Schindler’s List but lost out to Tom Hanks. The movie went on to win the Best Picture gong that year.

Bill Murray

Though he’s known for his comedic roles, Bill Murray, 65, has diversified quite a bit in recent years, starring in critically acclaimed dramas like Lost in Translation, for which he was nominated for Best Actor, but lost to Sean Penn.

Sigourney Weaver

The 66-year-old has been prolific in sci-fi icons like the Alien franchise, the first instalment of which earned her a Best Actress nomination. She was also nominated for Gorillas in the Mist and Working Girl, but was unable to beat Jodie Foster and Geena Davis respectively.

Albert Finney

80-year-old Finney’s acting career began almost 60 years ago and he has been nominated for Best Actor an impressive four times (including for Murder on the Orient Express) and once for Best Supporting Actor but sadly has never won.

Harrison Ford

He’s played some of the most iconic roles in cinema, from Indiana Jones to Han Solo, but Ford, 73, has yet to win an Oscar. He was nominated for Best Actor back in 1985 for his role in Witness, but was beaten by William Hurt for Kiss of the Spider Woman.

Ralph Fiennes

The incredibly versatile 53-year-old actor has starred in many well-received films, including Schindler’s List and The English Patient, for which he received a Best Supporting Actor and Best Actor nomination respectively.

Which actors do you think should have received an Oscar for their performance?
